The Farmers' Market is a great place to teach
kids about the importance of agriculture, eating healthy, and
spending their money wisely. At the Farmers' Market, the students
have an opportunity to talk to the grower or the market manager.
They are able to ask any questions they might have about how the
fruits and vegetables are grown and where they come from. At the
Farmers' Market, we stress the importance of eating healthy by
using the "5 A Day" Program. We are currently organizing
an informational packet and various activities that encourage
eating 5 serving of fruits and vegetables a day.
At
the Farmers' Market, the students learn the value and importance
of money. Along with this, we are able to incorporate basic math
skills by letting the students figure out how much it would cost
to buy what they are interested in. The Farmers' Market is a very
safe and fun environment for the children. It is recommended that
the children are divided into manageable groups with a
parent/teacher
leader. The market is also a multi-lingual environment, ranging
in Spanish to several Asian languages.
We at the Stockton
Certified Farmers' Market would like to make your field trip to
the market as easy,
educational
and beneficial as possible. We recommend visiting during the morning
at the Thursday market, this would be the most beneficial to you
and your students or the Friday market is also available for field
trips. Please contact the market manager @ 209-481-7421 if you are interested in visiting
the Thursday market. Please call the Stockton Downtown Alliance
to book a field trip for the Friday market 209-464-5246. Appointments are needed,
so we may be better prepared. It would help if we knew the ages or grades
of the children also. This way we are able to take into consideration
how we will present the necessary information. Take advantage
of this local, educational, and free
event that occurs May through November. Feel free to call if you
have any questions!
